THE ROUGH HOUSE THE ROUGH HOUSE was founded in 1936 as HAGEN BROTHERS BILLIARDS. Shelley Reid, a native Abbevillian, bought it from the Hagen brothers in 1987 and renamed it THE ROUGH HOUSE. For many years the pool hall had been known locally as the "Rough House." This moniker was not a comment on the character of the establishment or its customers but was taken from a old Popeye cartoon in which Popeye and Wimpy ordered hamburgers from a place called the "Rough House."The Hagen Brothers began serving hotdogs in 1946. Over the years, they developed their secret hotdog chili recipe which is known as "Rough House Chili." Shelley acquired the recipe with the establishment and continues to use it in making the hotdogs served today. Customers proclaim THE ROUGH HOUSE hotdogs to be the BEST THERE IS. The pool hall and restaurant looks very much like it did when it was founded over sixty years ago. There are three authentic Brunswick drop-pocket billiard tables. Gallery seating is provided along one wall. Diners are offered variety of seating choices from stools at the marble counter, to cozy booths, to the private round table in the front. The walls are filled with photographs, signs, and other memoriabilia. So come into THE ROUGH HOUSE and enjoy yourself. Order from our extensive menu and play billiards or just chat about the local fishing.Shelley is also general manager of WZLA-FM radio. |
